If you need clam bellies for bass and want them thawed out, please give Bill one day’s notice. You can also order tackle online at www.combsbaitntackle.com. Fluke fishing has not improved too much. Anglers continue to battle cold waters and excessive weed. Try the north side of the bay from Massapequa Cove, and the west side of the Wantaghs between the 2nd and 3rd. I went out on Wednesday with my grandson Jason and pal Ronnie and after a full day of checking drops both near and far we only connected with 22 short fluke and one keeper. The best baits were spearing and squid. Ocean fluking will not give you an advantage. Ling are plentiful on the outside reefs and wrecks, but it seems the cod have moved out. Stripers has been good. A customer came in and said he used clam bellies for 10 shorts and one keeper. The outgoing tide was key. Clam bellies are working well at the State Boat Channel from Zacks Bay to Tobay. Blues are invading the inner bays and the inlet and will hit tins. Take small tins to the areas from Unqua Point to Massapequa for some fast action on 2 to 4-pound cocktail blues. The shop is stocked with frozen local spearing, custom hand cut squid strips, salmon dyed squid strips, clam bellies, clam chum and fresh clams. REMEMBER – Use Combs bait to put fish on your plate.

The water temps in the back bays are now at the 61 degree mark on the outgoing tide and all species seem to respond well to the warmer water. Both fluke and bass anglers in the bay reported encountering blues that were scattered throughout the bay. Bass are jumping all over clam bellies and one angler connected with 22 fish. It was not uncommon for a boat to average 12 to 15 bass per trip with keepers to 33-inches coming to the net. Slug-Gos and swim shads were the hot tickets under the dock lights at night from Massapequa Cove to Amityville. The Wantagh, Meadowbrook and Robert Moses had a mix of bass and blues. Trolling action for bass was basically non-existent due to very tough sea conditions. Small weakfish invaded the Copiague Hole. On Sunday at Gilgo a customer employed a Bass Assassin to slam dunk a 9-pound weakie. Some weakfish were found at Ocean Beach. All fish were taken on plastics. Anglers who attempted to use sandworms found themselves overwhelmed by sea robins. The number of blowfish continue to increase daily and many are in the large to jumbo category. Bill said if you come by the shop he will give you some hot spots for the “Chicken of the Sea.” You may encounter some bass on the blowfish grounds as evidenced by Ross N and his two daughters connecting with three short bass while targeting blowfish. Fluke are getting active with the warmer waters. The problem is that anglers are battling a triple threat; winds, sea cabbage and slip gut. Very low tides are also hindering angler’s efforts. Regardless, some anglers have found success on the flattie grounds. Greg Niem worked the end of the outgoing tide at the East/West Channel and scored on fluke of 20, 21 and 23-inches. He duped them on a green/white bucktail and a green teaser tipped with spearing and squid. Mike Hill and Sean checked out Raritan Bay for bass and found nothing. On the way home a stop at Reynolds Channel near Long Beach high school produced a 5- pound flattie that hit a spearing/squid combo. The shop is stocked with frozen local spearing, custom hand cut squid strips, whole squid, clam bellies, clam chum and fresh clams. If you need an updated fishing report, please feel free to call the shop. Description:
Fluke activity was very slow in all areas. However, customer Mike Garudo employed a Combs Tangle Free white bucktail rig to slam dunk a 7-1/2 pound, 27-inch flattie. He nailed it in front of the Jones Beach Fishing Piers on the outgoing tide. Mike also released two shorts. Another customer searched for flatties and only found seven shorts. Unlike fluke, bass activity remained steady with four to six fish per boat. The catch was composed of shorts and some keepers to 30-inches. The outgoing tide was the most productive. The spots to target were local bridges and the State Boat Channel. The Hot Spot for bass was the Robert Moses Bridge at Fire Island. Take plenty of chum and work the outgoing tide. Anglers working the local wrecks and reefs along the 60 to 90-ft. ranges hauled in short and keeper cod, and played catch and release with ‘tog and sea bass. Clams were the bait that was needed. There was some very encouraging news in the blowfish department. They have shown up at the Sore Thumb Pocket at Fire Island and the occasional large winter flounder has been in the by catch. Work the incoming tide with mussels and worms. The blowfish are also migrating towards the channel near Frank and Dicks and into the Babylon Pool waters. Finally, a body of small blues has been scattered about the bay. Remember Combs is Long Island’s number one “Fluke Candy Store” and home of the always reliable Terminator Rig. The shop is stocked with frozen local spearing, custom hand cut squid strips, clam bellies, clam chum and fresh clams. It’s probably a good time to stock your freezers now with frozen bait. Hello, Fellow Anglers The shop is now available for call ahead curbside pickup. Please have your credit card ready when you place your order. (631) 264-3525. If you need clam bellies for bass and want them thawed out, please give us one day’s notice. You can also order tackle online at www.youfishing.com/combsbaitntackle.com Meanwhile, we have plenty of good news about fishing. Bass have begun congregating in excellent numbers around local bridges. Anglers who offered them clam bellies found loads of shorts and the occasional keeper to 32-inches. Please note that working the outgoing tide; especially the last two hours, is the key to nailing bass. Customers with waterfront properties reported seeing loads of bass in the canals during the day and at night under the lights. Away from the bridges, anglers found success with Bass Assassins, poppers and small bucktails. Some sharpies managed to connect with 10 to 15 fish in the early morning and early evening hours. The best action took place on the north side of the bay from Florence Ave Beach to the Lindenhurst Docks, and the Massapequa Cove along the East/West Channel. Flounder pounders had some activity south of Amity Beach in the 7 to 8-ft. ranges. The outgoing tide was also a key factor. A few winter flatties were also located in Massapequa Cove and the 23 buoy south of Amity. (Please note that the 23 buoy is not there right now, but you can locate the position on your GPS). Check the 10 to 12-ft. depths. Chum is an absolute necessity and fresh mussels are the best bait. If you need an updated fishing report before you go out, please feel free to call us at the shop. The shop is stocked with frozen local spearing, custom hand cut squid strips, clam bellies, clam chum and fresh clams. REMEMBER – Use Combs bait to put fish on your plate.
